BIOTA AFRICA has been jointly invented by African and German researchers aiming at the establishment of research supporting sustainable use and conservation of biodiversity in Africa. The German network for long term ecological research is intended to be a platform for communication, documentation and collaboration of scientists in long-term, system-oriented and interdisciplinary environmental research in Germany. LTER-D is a member in the international umbrella organisation of LTER (ILTER, www.ilternet.edu). It is an open network, which defines itself exclusively by the commitment of the members to their shared goals. Long-term approaches are particularly important in investigations of environmental changes, because such changes usually occur only gradually and with larger temporal fluctuations overlying the trend. Under such circumstances, only an adequately long observation period can be a sound basis to secure results and to support prognoses. The German LTER is still in the starting phase. The first workshop for mutual information and orientation was held in Duderstadt, central Germany, 24-26 March 2004. At this meeting, scientists from the institutions in Germany, which perform long-term ecological research in all relevant ecosystem types from the high mountains to the Wadden Sea, presented their concepts and results. The diversity, quality and potential of German LTER showed up clearly, and in future it will be further augmented by integrating LTER-D into the global ILTER-process. ... In a research project of the Helmholz Centre for Cultural Technology that extended over many years, parts of the Medical History Collection, the Portrait Collection, as well as the outstanding graphics of the University Library, all the exhibits of the large exhibition “Theatrum naturae et artis. Wunderkammern des Wissens" („Theatrum naturae et artis. Wonder Cabinet of Knowledge”), parts of the zoological teaching collection, important graphics from the Natural History Museum, and the complete sound archive for the “Cabinet of Knowledge” were systematically registered and digitised. Digital photos and scans, and sound files are the placeholders for the items of the collection in the examples database thus formed, and enable the study of rare or endangered individual items. The nucleus is, however, the transdisciplinary keyword system developed by the participating scientists. It is so arranged that classification characteristics can always be adapted to the current scientific standard without disturbing the data for the item. ZOBODAT (Zoological Botanical Database, formerly ZOODAT) is a digitally organised biogeographical database including analysis, documentation and communication facilities. Founded by Univ.-Prof. Dr. Ernst Rudolf Reichl in 1972, ZOBODAT was taken over by the province of Upper Austria in 1999 and is located at the Biology Centre of the Upper Austrian Provincial Museums. The database contains data on the distribution of animal and plant species and diverse supporting digital libraries. Traditionally most of the data refers to insects and geographically to Austria. However, ZOBODAT can be used for all organism groups and worldwide. At this time some Biology Centre data records that already exist in digital form are not yet completely integrated into ZOBODAT. This applies to part of the entomology collection and part of the invertebrate collection not including insects. As newly set goals besides the traditional representation of distributions on maps, user-friendly analysis possibilities were developed, making rapid inquiries of information on species, geographical areas and area-specific nature protection questions possible. Die POLLICHIA ist ein seit über 160 Jahren aktiver Naturkunde- und Naturschutzverband mit gegenwärtig 3.000 Mitgliedern, d. h.: über 160 Jahre Verantwortung für Natur und Landschaft. Die POLLICHIA wurde am 6. Oktober 1840 als eine zunächst rein naturwissenschaftlich tätige Gesellschaft gegründet. Es war der Deidesheimer Arzt Dr. Carl Heinrich SCHULTZ, der damals 25 Gelehrte, teils Männer des Hambacher Festes, aus der Pfalz und den Nachbargebieten zur Gründung des Vereins animierte, und man wurde sich rasch einig, diesem Verein den Namen "POLLICHIA" zu geben, denn damals kam die Sitte auf, Namen bedeutender Wissenschaftler in den Namen wissenschaftlicher Gesellschaften weiterleben zu lassen. Der Kaiserslauterner Arzt und bedeutende Botaniker Johann Adam POLLICH war ein solcher. Er war wenige Jahrzehnte vorher (1777) als Autor der weltweit berühmt gewordenen "Historia plantarum in palatinatu", einer der ersten umfassenden Beschreibungen der pfälzischen Pflanzenwelt (drei Bände, 1200 Pflanzenarten) hervorgetreten.
