The membrane organization and subcellular location of a protein can provide information about its functional role. Historically, these data have been difficult to produce on a large scale for higher eukaryotic organisms. However, recent advances in membrane organization prediction methods and high-throughput subcellular localization assays have made it possible to generate these datasets. LOCATE is a curated, web-accessible database that houses data describing the membrane organization and subcellular localization of proteins from the FANTOM3 Isoform Protein Sequence set. Membrane organization is predicted by the high-throughput, computational pipeline MemO. The subcellular locations of selected proteins from this set were determined by a high-throughput, immunofluorescence-based assay and by manually reviewing over 1700 peer-reviewed publications. The results of the MemO pipeline and the subcellular localization methods are stored in the database with supporting information including a graphical depiction of the membrane organization juxtaposed with InterPro-predicted features and links to several external databases. The database is searchable by subcellular location, protein class, descriptive keyword, and sequence similarity. The data are retrievable in human- and machine-readable formats and in batch. ... Der Feldhamster wird auf der Roten Liste der gefährdeten Tiere der Bundesrepublik Deutschland als "stark gefährdet" eingestuft. Nach der Bundesartenschutzverordnung § 13 gehört er zu den besonders geschützten Tierarten und ist durch die europäische Flora-Fauna-Habitat-Richtlinie Anhang IV geschützt. Die fortschreitende Intensivierung der Landwirtschaft macht diesen Schutz weitgehend unwirksam, da der Lebensraum Ackerland keiner Nutzungseinschränkung unterliegt. Um den Feldhamster vor dem völligen Verschwinden zu bewahren, werden zur Zeit in mehreren Bundesländern und in einzelnen europäischen Staaten Schutzprogramme entwickelt beziehungsweise erprobt. Die Arbeitsgemeinschaft Feldhamsterschutz (Agfha) führt in Hessen Schutzprojekte durch. Das Ziel des Projektes ist es, die aktuelle Verbreitung und Bestandsdichte des Feldhamsters festzustellen und dies in einem Gebiet, dass wie kaum ein anderes in Deutschland von einem enormen Flächenverbrauch, vor allem im Bereich der landwirtschaftlichen Flächen, betroffen ist. Die Maßnahmen zur Stabilisierung der Feldhamsterbestände dienen auch einer Reihe anderer an die Feldlandschaft angepasster Tierarten, wie dem Feldhasen, der Schafsstelze, der Feldlerche und dem Rebhuhn. Few species have shown such a dramatic and still unabated decline as the Common hamster over the past decades. This immense loss is illustrated by the latest results from the national report pursuant to Article 17 of the Habitats Directive. Meanwhile, there is no question that the decline of the species is not a phenomenon of the western edge of the distribution, but is also evident in neighbouring Eastern European countries. For this reason the “International Hamster Workgroup”, which has been working on the conservation and research of the Common hamster since 1994, is becoming increasingly important. Colleagues from all over Europe regularly take part in the annual meetings; demonstrating the urgent need to exchange information and have discussions to save the Common hamster. In France, the European Hamster (Cricetus cricetus) only lives in Alsace and its population is dropping sharply. In 1972, there were 329 Alsatian towns where this animal lived; in 2014, this species is only present with certitude in 17 towns, mainly located in the South-Western area of Strasbourg. A specific action plan targeting protection of the hamster in Alsace, with the 2007-2011 National Action Plan (NAP), was aimed at boosting populations in the three Priority Action Zones, and halting population decline. In spite of progress, the viability threshold in Alsace for the European Hamster still has not been reached. Because of this, a new NAP for the European Hamster was put in place for 2012-2016. Completed in 2003, the Human Genome Project (HGP) was a 13-year project coordinated by the U.S. Department of Energy and the National Institutes of Health. During the early years of the HGP, the Wellcome Trust (U.K.) became a major partner; additional contributions came from Japan, France, Germany, China, and others. Project goals were to identify all the approximately 20,000-25,000 genes in human DNA, determine the sequences of the 3 billion chemical base pairs that make up human DNA, store this information in databases, improve tools for data analysis, transfer related technologies to the private sector, and address the ethical, legal, and social issues (ELSI) that may arise from the project.
