The Zoological Institute is one of the oldest scientific institutions in St. Petersburg. In 2007 the institute became 175 years old although history of establishment of collections at the institute and the museum began much earlier, i.e. since the time of Peter the Great, who purchased exhibits for the Kunstkammer, the first Russian museum established by him in 1714. The first museum catalogue (1742) lists approximately 4000 representatives of mammals, birds, amphibians, fishes, insects and invertebrates, deposited in scientific collections of the Kunstkammer. The 18th century was the age of great expeditions including the famous academic expeditions of P.S. Pallas in the southern regions of Russia and Siberia. Extensive material collected during numerous marine and land expeditions of the early 19th century filled depository of the Kunstkammer. The official opening of the Zoological Museum took place in July 1832, which is accepted as the time of its foundation. Later the museum was transformed into the Zoological Museum of the Academy of Sciences. Its scientific collections comprise approximately 60,000,000 items. The Zoological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, a leading research institution is one of the most significant zoological institutions in the world. ... The Bavarian State Collection of Zoology (Zoologische Staatssammlung München, ZSM) collection of butterflies and moths actually includes about 6,000,000-7,000,000 specimens, representing 80,000-100,000 species, stored in about 50,000 drawers. Many other private collections have already been donated to the ZSM, but are currently still under the curation of the private owners. Further 2,000,000-3,000,000 specimens (museum Thomas Witt) are associated - as a public foundation – to the state collections, and are professionally curated by a scientist (Dr. W. Speidel). Hence, this association of Lepidoptera collections in Munich is by far the largest collection of butterflies and moths in Germany, and also on international scale it is one of the most outstanding and important collections. ... Amongst the major targets of the ZooSphere project are: An international repository and web hub for high resolution image sequences of biological specimen; Delivering content to various end user devices, such as dekstop computers, mobile devices and web browsers in general; Create a tool for scientists, especially taxonomists, to speed up and improve their research; Prevent physical object transfer via regular mail; Reduce travel costs and efforts related to local object inspection; Digital preservation of biological collection objects, which are subject to natural decay; Increasing the visibility and accesibility of biological collection objects; Making objects available to both: general public and scientists. The ZooSphere project is in a very early stage. Yet it already yields excellent results concerning the automatic high resolution image sequence capturing of biological collection objects. We preferably release all software and web components as early as possible, though they are still subject of frequent change. Thereby, we would like to gain early feedback and cooperations, to increase the efficiency of our work. You are welcome to send any feedback or suggestions via mail to: contact@zoosphere.net ...
