STERNA (Semantic Web-based Thematic European Reference Network Application) is the contribution of twelve European natural history museums and other institutions that collect and hold content on biodiversity, wildlife and nature in general, to the objectives and realisation of a European Digital Library. The project specifically addresses the many small cultural heritage institutions and content providers that want to actively participate and contribute to the European Digital Library initiative but lack both technical skills and financial resources to do so. To help content providers to make their valuable and rich resources available to a wider audience, our vision is to create a dispersed and networked information space, supported and sustained by a member network of autonomous content organisations which serves users with a special interest in nature and wildlife worldwide. The STERNA project is supported and partly funded by the eContentplus programme of the European Commission. ... [Information of the supplier]

The Stiftung Artenschutz (“Species Conservation Foundation”) is a joint initiative, currently comprising 45 respected zoos and nature conservation organisations. The foundation aims to preserve animal species (and their natural environment) which, although under severe threat of global extinction, do not have a strong enough lobby for their conservation. The Species Conservation Foundation achieves its goals through the joint initiative of currently 43 zoos and several nature conservation organisations, which provide public relations and financial support. International species conservation attains a new dimension through this concentration of specialists and funds. The work of the foundation and its partners and the sponsor commitment will be effectively communicated to over 20 million people every year. The innovative aspect of the Species Conservation Foundation’s concept is the idea of winning businesses as exclusive sponsors for a certain animal species in addition to conventional canvassing for donations and sponsorship. Support from these businesses makes it possible to implement conservation measures conceived by specialists for the highly endangered species. In return the sponsors will appear as exclusive sponsors together with their species on the Foundation Info Boards in all participating zoos, a measure which also offers great publicity. ... Microbiology builds upon biological material deposited in biological resource centers (BRCs) as a reference framework for collaborative research. BRCs assign so-called strain numbers to label the deposited material and are responsible for long-term preservation and worldwide distribution of the material. Cultured microorganisms can be deposited into multiple BRCs and BRCs also mutually exchange their holdings. As a result, many different strain numbers can be attached to biological material that stems from the same isolate. In practice, this material is considered equivalent and used interchangeably. This implies that finding information on given biological material requires all equivalent strain numbers to be used when searching. StrainInfo introduces strain passports for microorganisms: a uniform overview of information known about a given microbial strain. It contains all known equivalent strain numbers and information on the exchange history, sequences and related literature of the strain. ... [Information of the supplier]
Ever wonder how people figured out there used to be such things as dinosaurs? Curious about how scientists learned to reconstruct fossil skeletons? The knowledge we take for granted today was slow in coming, and along the way, scientists and scholars had some weird ideas. This Web site shows some of their mistakes, provides a timeline of events, gives biographies of a few of the people who have gotten us where we are today, and lists resources you can use to learn more. ... The Structural Genomics Consortium (SGC) is a not-for-profit organization that aims to determine the three dimensional structures of proteins of medical relevance, and place them in the public domain without restriction. The SGC operates out of the Universities of Oxford and Toronto and Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm. The SGC works on structures of proteins from its Target List of ~2,000 proteins, which comprises human proteins associated with diseases such as cancer, diabetes, inflammation, and genetic diseases, as well as proteins from human parasites such as those that cause malaria. Research at the SGC is divided into three areas: structural genomics of soluble proteins, structural genomics of integral membrane proteins, and structural chemistry of soluble proteins. ...
