Die Geschichte der Entomologie in Thüringen beginnt etwa in der Mitte des 18. Jahrhunderts. 1860 erschien von Keferstein und Wernburg die erste Lokalfauna, später erfolgte die Zusammenstellung der Käferfauna von Kellner (1873) und der Schmetterlinge von Knapp (1877). Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts mündete die Tätigkeit der einzelnen Entomologen in der Gründung des ersten Entomologen-Vereins mit Sitz in Erfurt. Später wurden die entomologisch arbeitenden Gruppen unter dem Dach des Kulturbundes der DDR, in der Gesellschaft für Natur und Umwelt zusammengefasst und arbeiteten hier als Fachgruppen für Entomologie. 1990 nach der politischen Wende wurde der Thüringer Entomologenverband neu gegründet mit dem Ziel, die Entwicklung der Insektenfauna zu verfolgen und zu vergleichen und eine Gesamtdarstellung der Verbreitung der Insekten in Thüringen zu erreichen sowie verstärkt den Schutz der Insektenfauna zu unterstützen. Die Thüringer Entomologen geben seit 1993 ihre Vereinszeitschrift "Mitteilungen des Thüringer Entomologenverbandes e. V." und eine Publikationsreihe, die "Check-Listen Thüringer Insekten" heraus. In den Thüringer Naturkundemuseen Erfurt, Gotha, Jena und auch Gera sind eine Reihe bedeutender Sammlungen erhalten geblieben, die viel über die Entwicklung der Entomofauna in Thüringen aussagen können. ... Der VTO wurde am 15.12.90 im Haus Dacheröden in Erfurt gegründet.
