Abstract: I am pleased to invite you to ISS 2019, which will take place on April 28 – May 3, 2019 at the International Convention Center in Jeju, Korea. Given Korea's long history of seaweed aquaculture, with a growing interest in seaweeds as future resources, the scientific theme of ISS 2019 is "Seaweeds: From Tradition to Innovation". To harmonize the 'tradition' and 'innovation', ISS 2019 will take advantages of advanced seaweed aquaculture technologies and the broad spectrum of algal research in Korea. The topics of plenary talks and mini-symposia will include but not be limited to taxonomy and biodiversity, climate change and marine ecology, genomics, seaweed aquaculture, and industrial applications of seaweed. Jeju achieved three UNESCO site designations, including Biosphere Reserve, World Natural Heritage, and Global Geopark. These accomplishments are altogether termed the 'Triple Crown'. These international designations make Jeju an environmental treasure, with over twelve million people, including three million foreigners, visiting the island every year. Jeju is also known to be one of the places with the best seaweed diversity, with over 700 species recorded. The ISS 2019 will offer an unparalleled opportunity to learn the most advanced technologies, exchange knowledge, and network with our peers.
