Abstract: The Global Botanic Gardens Congress is the premier international event for botanic gardens, held every three years. The Dunedin Botanic Garden and Dunedin city are proud to be the hosts of the 5th Congress. For more than 450 years, botanic gardens have been at the forefront of human understanding and knowledge of plants and the environment in which they live. In recent times, however, concerns have grown over the global impact of human activities and the degradation of our natural environment. Specific themes to be covered at the Congress are: a) Success globally – progress and achievements in plant conservation from around the world; b) Beyond the garden walls - social engagement – involving our communities; using our skills to restore damaged habitats; engaging in the policy debate; c) Horticultural changes – are we able to meet the challenges and opportunities facing botanic gardens and d) Science and innovation – using our resources to develop new solutions in a changing world.
