Abstract: At the 9th international Meeting on Vegetation Databases (26–28 February 2010, Hamburg, Germany), it was decided to establish a global metadatabase of vegetation data that is publicly available. Such a metadatabase shall provide an overview of exiting data, allow researchers to retrieve suitable data for specific research questions, and thus enhance the awareness and application of this valuable but underestimated source of biodiversity information. The metadatabase is managed by the 15 members of a worldwide steering committee. All databases with temporally and spatially explicit species co-occurrence data of plants for plots up to 1 ha are eligible for GIVD, provided their owners are basically willing to share them with other scientists. GIVD is a metadatabase, i.e. it contains data about these vegetation-plot databases, e.g. how many relevés from which regions are included, not the data themselves. Further, there are links to the databases (if online), search and analytical functions. [Information of the supplier]
