Creator: Nixon, Kevin; et al.
Abstract: PhytoImages is part of the Diversity of Life (DOL) web interface and Encino tools for systematic/biodiversity data management developed by Kevin Nixon (Cornell University) and collaborators. The Plant Biology Biology Department at Southern Illinois University Carbondale was the second publicly accessible installation of the system outside of the www.plantsystematics.org and www.diversityoflife.org sites hosted at Cornell University. This “node”, now called PhytoImages, is run on a local server that was put into operation in April 2006. As with plantsystematics.org, most of the photographs contributed to PhytoImages derive from members of the original curatorial board, e.g. Daniel Nickrent and Dale Vitt. Dr. Pieter Pelser is the second most prolific contributor to the site. Over 1000 slides from the late Dr. Walter Welch (former faculty member in Plant Biology at SIUC) were scanned and now reside digitally on PhytoImages. Despite the name, PhytoImages contains photographs of many organisms besides plants. If you would like to contribute a photo of something biological, you are welcome to do so.
