Abstract: With more than 30000 known species ground beetles show one of the most varied families in the group of the beetles. Populating a very wide variety of habitats, from treetops to deep caves, from the seashore up to alpine heights or from very wet biotopes up to extreme dry locations, there are numerous specialists. Even if most species are active only at night, and therefore run beetles do not count to the most color-splendid insects, nevertheless, they are able to fascinate not only experts. Also in Central Europe there are more than 800 species, in Europe even about 3000 species. This site would like to give an overview about the European ground beetles with photos and show to the forms, colors and detailed wealth of this group, serve not least, however, also with high-resolution photos as a determination help.
