Abstract: The Kärnten Natural History Society is one of the oldest, and richest in tradition, European societies – its research and education activities go back to 1848. In 1974, as one of the founders, in 1884, of the Kärnten State Museum, it transferred its ownership rights to the Rudolfinum, together with its natural history collection, to the State of Kärnten. The Society is divided into nine subject groups that cover a wide range of natural history: botany, mycology, entomology, ornithology, karst and cave investigation, meteorology, geography, and zoology. The society offers its ca. 2000 members numerous excursions each year, which extend from natural history walks in Kärnten’s mountain country to expeditions in all corners of the earth. Meetings, lectures, exhibitions, and regular members meetings for all those interested in natural history enlarge the programme. Besides the research activity, adult education, and the sponsoring of children’s and youth activities, the third strongpoint of the society is its publishing activity.
