Abstract: The objective of the MÉTA project is to survey, document and analyse the actual state of vegetation heritage of Hungary. This knowledge is systematically collected into a national database and will provide sound basis for more operative nature protection, landscape management planning on country scale and regional level and the maintenance of natural ecosystems. The main goal of the project is to create an actual, country-scale habitat map and habitat database of Hungary based on a field survey covering the whole county. The Landscape Ecological Vegetation Mapping (MÉTA) includes the compilation of the habitat map of the country and the attributes collected in the field for the particular habitats. Natural and semi-natural grasslands, marshlands, wetlands, woodlands of indigenous tree species and shrublands are surveyed in detail, while arable lands, plantations, agrarian and industrial areas are surveyed superficially.
