Abstract: Arctos integrates specimen data, scientific results, and extensive collection-management tools in order to facilitate and demonstrate the use of biological collections. Most of what is known about a specimen can be included in Arctos, and, except for rare data encumbered for proprietary reasons, data are accessible to the public. Arctos integrates with BerkeleyMapper and GenBank, and a DiGIR provider supplies various federated portals (e.g., GBIF). Arctos is currently three independent clones. One is a multi-hosting version at the University of Alaska that includes collections at the U of A Museum of the North, the University of New Mexico Museum of Southwestern Biology, and Western New Mexico State University. A second clone will be running in 2007 at the Museum of Vertebrate Zoology, University of California, Berkeley. A third clone is under development by the Harvard Museum of Comparative Zoology. Arctos is largely based on the Collections Information System at MVZ. Development efforts are being shared, and programming is freely available. [Information of the supplier]
