Abstract: AlgaeBase is a database of information on algae that includes terrestrial, marine and freshwater organisms. At present, the data for the marine algae, particularly seaweeds, are the most complete. Initially set up in 1996 as an attempt to list all the known species of seaweeds in the world and their nomenclatural authorities, it has been expanded to include other sources (literature references) nomenclatural information (including types), synonyms (often annotated), pictures (over 1,000, mainly seaweeds), and common names (over 2,500). As of September 2011, 125,000+ species and infraspecific names are in the database, as well as 12,000+ images, 45,000+ bibliographic items, and 175,000+ distributional records.
