The aim of this project has been to compile a comprehensive interactive catalogue of all the published genus-group names of Lepidoptera from Linnaeus, 1758, up to the present, and to provide full-colour images of representatives of most included families. The catalogue comprises a total of 31,147 genus-group names including all available names and all junior homonyms, junior synonyms, unnecessary replacement names, misspellings, incorrect citations, and suppressed, unavailable, invalid or rejected names most of which are given in the following publications (arranged chronologically), hereafter referred to as the source material. ... Part I is a relational Database, allowing immediate cross accessibility to taxonomic data, distribution, literature references in abbreviated form, distribution and list of collections containing particular species. Additional facilities permit displaing lists of species in particular papers, countries and collections, lists of authors. Miniatures of drawings and photographs, as well as abbreviated coded literature references and names of collections expands into full after a click. All these data are interconnected. Part II - Diagnostic Drawings Library, presents the same data in expanded form, available in alphabetical order, with some cross links. After the death of Dr. Jany Renz in 1999, the University of Basel received his herbarium and library by legacy. The Swiss Orchid Foundation has been established on October 3th, 2001 to maintain this cultural and scientific heritage. Now there are 26.000 Herbarium Specimens of Orchids from the Collection of Renz, Bernoulli & Cario, Basel Botanische Gesellschaft (BBG) and Botanisches Institut Basel (BIB) available on our Website. The Foundation has started to establish the World Orchid Iconography: It will document all the orchid species on Earth by means of substantial graphical material, which is provided on this website. It consists of photographs, hand-coloured drawings and herbarium specimens. With ca. 140,000 entries, BibliOrchidea is the largest orchid literature database worldwide.
