During the first thirty years of Atlas Florae Europaeae (AFE), the basic technology for the collection of distribution data and publication of distribution maps has remained practically unchanged. Manual map production as such is rather tedious. Furthermore, distribution data available only on printed maps are not suitable for further (computerized) analyses. The construction of the Atlas Florae Europaeae database was started in 1992. The primary goal was to make the distribution data available in digital format, and the additional goal was the computerization of the editorial process of AFE. The printed AFE distribution maps were processed this way: - the maps were scanned at 300 dpi resolution / - locations of the grid cells (4419) were calculated on the scanned bitmap images / - arrays of black pixels were searched from the bitmaps using custom software / - the map originals and and their interpretation were compared using custom software. The database BioLIS (Biological Literature Information Senckenberg) indexes biological journal literature from the period 1970 to 1996. It is bilingual (German/English) and includes journals and series from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. With regard to subject and geographical orientation it forms an extension of the Biological Abstracts database. EU-nomen enables the correct use of species names and their classification to more accurately manage information on animals and plants. This is the first all-taxon inventory of all European species. PESI provides standardised and authoritative taxonomic information by integrating and securing Europe’s taxonomically authoritative species name registers and nomenclators (name databases) and associated exper(tise) networks that underpin the management of biodiversity in Europe. PESI defines and coordinates strategies to enhance the quality and reliability of European biodiversity information by integrating the infrastructural components of four major community networks on taxonomic indexing into a joint work programme. Ascertaining when and where genes are expressed is of crucial importance in order to understand the physiological role of a given gene/protein and the interactions between them. In addition, the normal expression patterns can then be compared to those observed in a variety of pathological conditions to identify pathological hallmarks of gene expression. The EURExpress, an integrated project funded by the EU under the VI Framework proposes a transcriptome-wide acquisition of expression patterns chiefly by means of in situ hybridization (ISH) with non-radioactive probes and will use this data to establish a web-linked, interactive digital transcriptome atlas of embryonic mouse. The final goal of the project is to create the expression data of > 20,000 genes by RNA in situ hybridization on sagittal sections from E14.5 wild type murine embryos. This data will result in a detailed description (at a cellular level) of gene expression patterns in the developing mouse. The “transcriptome atlas” will be generated using a newly developed automated RNA in situ hybridization system. Automated scanning microscopes will collect image data, which will be electronically sent out in a digital format for annotation. The latter will be performed using a web-based “virtual” microscope and be entered in a hierarchical database specifically designed to hold large amounts of image data and display them in a user-friendly format. For a subset of genes, mainly those directly involved in human diseases, expression data will also be generated by using human and murine tissue arrays. This will offer the opportunity to compare human and mouse expression patterns in adult tissues. This project builds on a strong European concentration of skills in gene expression analysis and mouse genomics and integrates European skills, efforts, resources and information in the field of systematic gene expression analysis. EURISCO is a web-based catalogue that provides information about ex situ plant collections maintained in Europe. EURISCO is based on a European network of ex situ National Inventories (NIs) that makes the European biodiversity data available everywhere in the world. The EURISCO Web Catalogue automatically receives data from the NIs through country NFPs. It currently contains passport data on more than 1.1 million samples of crop diversity representing 1,450 genera and 8,665 species from 38 countries. These samples of crop diversity represent more than half of the ex situ accessions maintained in Europe and roughly 19% of total worldwide holdings.
