PGRDEU is the central documentation of ex-situ collections of plant genetic resources in Germany. FloraWeb is the online offering of the Federal Agency for Nature Protection (BfN) concerning wild plant species, plant communities, and the natural vegetation of Germany. At present the species selection is restricted to ferns and flowering plants (phanerogams), the extension to mosses (bryophytes) is planned. The entries come from current, actualised databases and projects of the BfN and its co-operating partners (see below) and thus are available to the public in their current form. Under the menu point “Plant species” ("Pflanzenarten") ca. 3500 species profiles with up to 55 individual items of information about taxonomy, biology, ecology, habitat, distribution, and inventory situation, endangerment and protection, as well as photos, can be accessed that are generated at the current time by means of dynamic accessing the underlying databases. The species descriptions can be accessed by name, by alphabetical name lists, or a systematic family tree. Information about distributions in Germany is available through dynamically prepared maps and the interactive GIS application FloraMap. In the sub-menu point “Properties” ("Suche nach Eigenschaften") all individual information items in searches can be freely combined. Again, the resulting species lists can be transferred to the map module FloraMap where one then has the possibility of displaying the spatial distribution of these groups of species in Germany. Under the menu point “Associations” ("Gesellschaften"), the likewise collected information about plant communities and their regional endangerment in Germany is stored in the profiles. These profiles of the vegetation units are extended through a database of phytosociological records under the name “VegetWeb”, which is to be continuously expanded. Under the menu point “Vegetation map” the units of the potential natural vegetation of Germany are displayed in profiles, with text explanations and photos, that will be expanded through the map display dynamically linked to the profiles. The data-offering thus defined in the area “Data service” will be expanded in “InformationsNetz” with explanations of the botanical connections and further information about the data sources. ... The list of the molluscs of central Europe is still being compiled. It began in a workshop. The aim of the workshop was the compilation of a list in which the nomenclatural changes in standard works (Zilch 1962, Kerney/Cameron/Jungbluth 1983) were to be justified. Unfortunately the explanations of some authors were somewhat fragmentary. Changes suggested by the CLECOM list, the annotated species list of French domestic molluscs and Fauna Europaea are successively integrated into the present list; up to now, they have been taken into consideration only in parts. All colleagues are urgently asked to contribute to the improvement of the list with their (short!) comments (if necessary with literature references). Comments may be given with author’s names. The Semantic Network Service (SNS) of the Federal Environment Agency provides support for all questions concerning environmental terms including the common place names. SNS contains a bi-lingual (German/English) semantic network which consists of three components.: (1) the Environmental Thesaurus UmThes® with its 33,759 inter-networked terms. UmThes® also is the German source of the European GEneral Multilingual Environmental Thesaurus (GEMET) (19 languages); (2) the Geo-Thesaurus-Environment (GTU) with 18,931 geographic names and the spatial intersections of all these places; (3) an Environmental Chronology of current or historical events that affected the environment. ... The German Society for Mycology (DGfM) heralded a new era in the occurrence registration of macrofungi with the project “Ecological Fungus Mapping 2000”. This does not replace the, up to the present, chorological mapping whose results, 4 million records of occurrence gathered over 18 years of painstaking work by the former President of the DGfM German Krieglsteiner, are immortalised in 2 volumes of the “Distribution Atlas of German Macrofungi”. “Mapping 2000” is rather to be understood as an extension of pure chorological mapping. The computer support with the PC program “Ecological Fungus Mapping 2000” makes it possible to evaluate and administer records. The aim of the project is the registration of all university collections in Germany, and also taking into consideration collection holdings which are no longer available, eliciting relevant data about their holdings and history, as well as the presentation of the results in the internet. In this project, university collections are defined as collections belonging to a scientific, theological and liberal arts university, that contain representational and audio-visual items with scientific and/or cultural values, collections of living organisms (e.g. botanical gardens, aquaria) and memorial institutions connected with the university, which are specially used for teaching and research and/or fulfil the function of a museum. Not considered are photographic slide libraries found in the universities since they deal predominantly with secondary sources, and classics collections in libraries and central archives since these are already registered elsewhere.
